AI vs. Jobs: Understanding the Impact on Labor Market

Updated: Oct 11

AI vs Jobs
AI vs Jobs

As an economics teacher this question would always pop up in my classroom when we would discuss the labor market. It would also personally bother me if AI would replace my job. Few years back in Bengaluru, India I heard about a school that had brought a robot teacher to the classroom to teach. It was scary. Already, there had been a big transition in the teaching role during Covid as the teachers were expected to learn to use technology overnight. On top of that, the students started feeling that they could learn at their own pace and therefore the class environment changed totally. The role of a teacher overnight turned to be of just a facilitator.

First, we need to understand whether AI will be replacing every type of job or only a few kinds. There are certain types of jobs that require human connection and emotional intelligence, which cannot be replaced by AI. Jobs such as teaching, counselling, and healthcare require interpersonal skills that are difficult to recreate with technology. In these fields, AI can be used to support and enhance the work of human professionals.

The robot teacher being in the classroom can aid the teacher but cannot and should not replace the teacher. One of the biggest advantages of AI could be that it might be able to analyze data on individual students' learning patterns and adjust its instruction accordingly. Another benefit is that AI can offer immediate feedback to students, helping them to identify areas where they need improvement. This allows for personalized attention that may not be possible for a teacher to address in the setting of a classroom with many students.

So, what is the role of a teacher? Teachers have a unique ability to offer emotional support and build relationships with their students. Teachers can provide students with encouragement and motivation, and help them to develop important social and emotional skills. In their growing years especially, the students need guidance and mentorship which can be provided by the teachers as they can build meaningful connections with the students that AI may not be able to.

Together, these two approaches can help to create a well-rounded educational experience that meets the needs of each individual student.

Ultimately, one might say it is important to approach the integration of AI into the workforce with a thoughtful and strategic approach, weighing the pros and cons, and working to create a balance between automation and human employment. By doing so, we can ensure that AI technology is used to create a better future for everyone, rather than amplifying issues such as unemployment, which is a significant concern when discussing AI impact on the labor market.

There is no denying the fact that AI can create new job opportunities in areas such as programming, data analysis, and AI development. It is also important to consider the potential benefits of AI in terms of productivity and efficiency, which can lead to economic growth and job creation. As AI technology advances, it has the potential to revolutionize industries such as transportation, manufacturing, and logistics, leading to increased efficiency and productivity.

But again, we cannot ignore the fact that AI has the potential to automate certain types of jobs, which may lead to unemployment in some sectors. AI might provide employment to highly skilled people but what about low skilled labor? What will be the condition of populous developing countries where there is a vicious cycle of poverty and unemployment? Where basic needs of food, health, literacy are still the biggest cause for concern? What is the future of the jobs of uneducated or low-skilled people? Won’t this lead to widening of the social gaps and income inequalities? These concerns further highlight the need to carefully consider the AI impact on the labor market. Food for thought- whether AI technology will create a better future for EVERYONE?
